SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M.—The Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located at the Stables at Tamaya on the Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico, announces the third annual Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Week fundraiser. Between April 1 and April 4, 2020, the program will host a series of activities to bring awareness to the plight of unwanted horses in New Mexico and raise funds for its ongoing efforts to rescue and rehabilitate animals in need.
Each year, thousands of horses are abandoned throughout New Mexico. Several factors can lead to unwanted, abandoned, or surrendered horses including a horse’s decline in health or behavioral problems, and the owner’s financial or physical hardships.
“We are thrilled to announce the third annual Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Week, raising funds to help us continue to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned and neglected horses,” said Connie Collis, Director of the Stables at Tamaya. “The Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Program is dedicated to giving horses a second chance at life and providing them with all the support and resources they need to lead happy, healthy lives. The 2020 fundraiser features multiple events for guests and local residents to support our rescued horses.”
Last year’s events raised $67,000 which was used for veterinary care, shelter, and feed for the horses. Since the program’s inception, the Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Program has rescued and rehabilitated 120 animals.
The 2020 fundraiser is a four-day event that teaches the importance of the horse rehabilitation process. Each day features different activities including a youth volunteer day at the Stables, the Help a Horse Auction, a community rodeo and the Horseshoes and Heels Gala.
Youth Volunteer Day—Wednesday, April 1
The fundraiser event will kick off with a youth volunteer day on Wednesday, April 1. Local middle and high school students will give the Tamaya horses a “spa day,” while learning about what it takes to care for these incredible animals. Students will meet, interact with, and learn how to treat horses, and work with wranglers and volunteers to help bathe, groom, and brush the horses to get them camera ready for the fun events to follow.
Help a Horse Auction—Thursday, April 2
On Thursday, April 2, the Stables hosts local businesses and individuals for the Help a Horse Auction. Guests and local businesses can meet the horses currently in the Tamaya Horse Rehabilitation Program. Wranglers will introduce horses with special needs and describe the treatment or training needed to fully rehabilitate that horse. Attendees will then “bid” to be the horse’s sponsor and cover those expenses. Each sponsor receives a framed photo of the animal as well as updates on the horse in its rehabilitation progress.
Community Rodeo—Friday, April 3
On Friday, April 3, the Stables at Tamaya will host a community rodeo which features local cowgirls and cowboys barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, and more. This family-friendly event also has stick horse races for children and the opportunity for guests to meet and interact with horses currently in the rehabilitation program. Food trucks will be on site along with complimentary beverages. Entrance to the rodeo is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Shuttles depart from the Equestrian Circle at 6:40 p.m.
Horseshoes and Heels Gala—Saturday, April 4
The multi-day fundraiser concludes with the Horseshoes and Heels Gala on the evening of April 4 in the Tamaya Ballroom. The gala begins with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. including a silent auction and photos with some of the rescued horses. Guests will then enjoy a three-course meal specially prepared by the resort’s culinary team, followed by a live auction, live music and dancing. AmFund will also host a Luxury Trip of a Lifetime silent auction. Tickets are $125 per person and $900 per table of eight. A discounted room rate of $189 is available for guests attending the gala.
‘Buy a Child a Horseback Ride’
Supporters who are unable to attend the event can buy a child a horseback ride at the Stables at Tamaya. With a donation of $50, a deserving New Mexico child gets a wrangler-led trail ride.
